Running high-voltage discharge lamps on 230 V mains

It is always a bit problematic to run high-voltage large discharge lamps that are meant for 380-415 V mains as such circuit is not always available. There's always the solution of employing step-up transformer ballasts but such gear is usually very heavy and power hungry. An easy way out is to use an electronic ballast designed to run such lamps from 220-250 V mains, like in the present case with a Philips HPL-N 2000W. Not only is such system lightweight, it is also very efficient (95 % typ.) and fully power factor corrected, which avoids the problem of pulling too much current from the mains, which can happen all too easily with high-wattage lamps such as the present one

We do not have any lamps that need a high voltage supply, but it is interesting to see how it can be done. How easy is a ballast such as this to obtain..?

That's the issue - such ballast is not particularly easy to come by unfortunately. I got this 2 kW one by chance on e-bay.
