1000W SON/T
Just got this Belgium made Philips 1kW SON/T through the post. I bought it as I know it came from a large collection being sold of via eBay. Its packaging has ‘MCR Test-lab’ written on it so got me inquisitive! It also has the date 7/6/00 written on it but the lamp has A7 for the date code, so looks like a Jan 1987 manufactured lamp. It is also the only Philips high pressure sodium lamp, I have, that actually has the twisted support wire as shown in their early catalogues. I believe this was done to reduce shadows when used in luminaries with reflectors. Compared to another 1kW SON/T I have the arc tube is slightly longer. Quite a monster lamps and although it appears to have had some run time it’s not all that much.

The date writted on the lamp might be the date it went into service, we write the date that we first light lamps. Wonder

That's possible. I was thinking it might have been when the previous collector got it as it is hand written on the carton along with the lab info. I also sometime put dates on lamps when they go into service to see how well they do. Smile

Nice big SON/T! Its overall design (frame, 5-pcs burner, and barium flash getter) indicates that this is clearly a 1980s lamp (made at the Turnhout, Belgium, factory), so A7 does translates to January 1987 indeed. The lamp construction saw several key upgrades during the 1990s, such as a ZrFeCo getter pellet replacing the barium mirror, and a simpler 3-pcs burner replacing the old 5-pcs design. The lamp reference also changed to SON-T 1000W during that period.

It's wonderful that you can share such in depth knowledge.! Love High Pressure Sodium (Tubular)

Indeed, thanks for confirming the date and type. It would be nice to find out what the 'MCR Test-lab' refers too. I think the collector had a few items with this reference.
