Negative glow lamps: new and old design after some use

The improved negative glow lamp (center - see there) works very well as long as the release of sodium from the electrode sleeves is kept to a minimum. Its operation is very stable even with a highly reactive plasma in low-pressure water vapor, and there is no sign of bulb blackening at all, a problem which plagues glow lamps made with standard unsheathed electrodes (top and bottom). However, the disadvantage of the new lamp is that it requires an operation at high frequency (kHz and up) in order to properly excite the glow discharge.
