Philips used to produce many specialty lamps, such as this highly unusual dual-filament source intended for signaling purposes (lighthouses, helicopter landing pads, and oil platforms). However, such products were sold in very low quantities, which did not generate enough profit for the company. As a result the Dutch sold their low-volume lamp businesses from the mid-1990s till the 2010s in order to focus on large-volume products only. Dr. Fischer of Diez, Germany, acquired the specialty incandescent and medium-pressure UV operations, and thus continued the production of the present lamp.
