Mazda 250W ME/D Lamp

Here is an interesting lamp, it is a Mazda 250W ME/D lamp, the /D suffix indicating it is to be run base down. It was developed as a short arc projector lamp and was popular for monochrome slide and film projectors, amongst other applications. The electrodes are of solid tungsten and the lamp has an operating pressure of 30 atmospheres..! The base is identical to the BS546 5A plug, once a very common fixture in UK properties. I am assuming the date of manufacture is 1969, as this date is scratched by hand on the base, presumably the date of installation. The arc tube is very black, so it's most likely had a lot of use, but it clears almost immediately when the lamp is lit. Photos of that to follow.

Yes it was, the normal 250W MV ballast didn't have enough 'oomph' so we had to use a MH one with an ignitor Shocked
