Revox B77 Tape Recorder I used these machines many years ago when I was an engineer at a large hospital radio station in Birmingham. We had two of these and also two of the previous machine the A77. They were (and still are) excellent recorders. This one records at 3¾ and 7½ inches per second, they also did a high speed version which used 7½ and 15 ips, but that was a little excessive for our use (and it used twice as much tape..!) This one was on eBay at a very reasonable price, so I couldn't not buy it..! The only problem with it is the tape counter isn't working, but that's probably just a broken belt so should be relatively easy to fix (oh dear, I've said it now..!) Keywords: Off Topic

News flash, they're not cheap here, either Laughing It's a really lovely machine though, been after one for 40+ years so I thought it's now or never.

Oh, top notch machine, and very desirable in its day. I still have a poverty model Philips reel to reel but it suffers from degrading plastic parts as well as belts. I have all but abandoned tape though as I found my collection of tapes were shredding the oxide coating due to moisture ingress. You need to bake the tapes for a long time to drive out moisture before use if this happens or it will be full of drop-outs. Had to do this with the radar data tapes from the Lockerbie disaster so they could be replayed for the trial without data loss.

I only really have a couple of tapes that I recorded at the radio station back in the late 80s, they play ok but are a bit woolly. I'm really going to start all over again recording on reel to reel rather than cassette, next purchase will have to be a bulk tape eraser..! Trouble is most of the ones on eBay are from the US and so are going to be costly with shipping and customs charges Mad

Yeah, reel to reel quality is so much better than cassette. If it sound woolly it may just a head clean, but I'm sure you'll have done that. My old work threw out a couple of bulk erasers used for the audio voice tapes used in coms equipment. I was going to save one but it was ridiculously heavy and I didn't have space for it. It was built into a nice dove-tailed wooden box too with a letterbox style front to slide the tape in. It didn't hum at 50Hz it positively growled at 50Hz Very Happy

I had a couple of them designed for erasing VHS tapes when I worked as a CCTV operator for a bus company, when I started they still had several buses with VHS tapes which needed changing twice a week. I should have snaffled one when I left, but I think they might have noticed..! We also had a slightly smaller one designed for reel-to-reel tapes at the hospital radio station I worked at in the 80s; I was in charge of the tape library so used it quite a lot. Again, I think they might have noticed if I'd 'acquired' it Mr. Green

We have now fettled the machine with the new belts, and it's now working as it should. Cool
I've also made a stand for it, so that the weight of it isn't on the Hi-Fi components. Smile
