This is one of the more interesting things I have found while playing with neon tubing and gasses. The picture shows a 20cm or so length on 8mm neon tube. both ends are sealed off and there is a low pressure argon gas inside. There is also a small amount of iodine in there with the argon.  There are no electrodes here in the tube but it is being excited but a 25kHz HV supply connected on the outside of either end on the tube with copper foil. Note, there appears to be two discharge paths in the tube at the same time.  From my testing the two paths seem to be the rectified paths of the AC supply. Placing a magnet close by confirms this by making the gap between the discharge paths larger due to the field interaction with the plasma.

Very neat experiment there! What is the argon pressure? And any idea about the coupled power and the temperature of the tube? That split discharge path is rather intringuing.
