Mercury Rectifier Tube
This appears to be quite an early mercury rectifier.  Later designs tend to have shields around the cathode obscuring the filament. The zig-sag heated cathode, and it support wires, can be seen beneath the circular plate anode.  It is operating close to maximum rating here producing the familiar blue mercury discharge.

That's a very nice tube, Mark. What current intensity is this rated for exactly?

Thanks Max, 600mA current rating and I think PIV of 4kV. Shown pretty much at 600mA 240V
