Comfort SON-T Added this Comfort SON-T to my collection. The interesting version of the SON-T sports a shorter fatter arc tube, with printed starter assist conductive track. Think it was manufactured in 2009 given the solid-getter. The light output is indeed warm and pleasant enough for indoor use, but it’s run up time is quite long before good colour quality is achieved. I’ve included the spectrum expecting to see significant bark space broadening but it looks like a compromise has been reached between colour and efficiency. Keywords: Lamps

Added this Comfort SON-T to my collection. The interesting version of the SON-T sports a shorter fatter arc tube, with printed starter assist conductive track. The light output is indeed warm and pleasant enough for indoor use, but it’s run up time is quite long before good colour quality is achieved. Nice addition! Philips phased out those lamps in April 2012 following the application of the EU directive on minimum HID lamp efficacy. The compromise you speak of is a CRI limited to 65 Ra8 - high enough to be a noticeable improvement over the color of classic HPS lamps (especially of the Super type whose light has a more yellowish tint), and not too high so the penalty on the lumen efficacy remains limited. There's a lot to like in those Deluxe/Comfort sodium lamps, they have an interesting design, and they are now part of lighting history, so they certainly have their place in a collection!

Didn't know they phased them out that long ago. We still have a couple in the stores at work, and I know of one road where the inventory specifies Son-Cmft 150 lamps rather than the usual SNT.
Although I think we stopped using the comforts around the time we went to electronic dimming ballasts. I think the comfort lamps didn't like that very much.

I've never tried any SON Comfort lamps on electronic ballasts, that's something I should definitely do. Maybe the longer run-up time of this lamp type triggers the driver's safety protection...
