Self-ballasted S450BT37 during operation

The picture above shows the mercury arc tube and the tungsten ballast of a 1983 Westinghouse S450BT37 during operation. The incandescent filament was split in two M-shaped sections in order to ensure a homogeneous and symmetrical light distribution when the lamp is used in a reflective high-bay luminaire, as it often was in replacement of 500 W 120 V GLS lamps.

Great sharp crisp image there. I find it quite hard to catch images like this with the different focal points and internal reflections from the outer envelope.

Tuopeek - Dealing with those reflections can be a challenge indeed, so it's important to find the right angle and exposure in order to get the best outcome possible. It's a trial and error process, one that's well worth the time and effort.
