Got this from eBay for a cheap price. I believe these were intended for printing use as a source of UVA but the interesting shape reminds me of the old gumball style luminaires.

That reflector shape and stippled front bulb face are meant to ensure a homogeneous beam pattern. And yes, those lamps are meant to be used in photoprinting applications.

Oooh, good to see you on, we have couple of these left, we bought 5 of them from a printer who was replacing them, we've traded three of them though.

Ours have HG on them which means hard glass, this appears to be a standard soft glass one.

@Max - Makes sense to have that shape.

@Ria - Thanks I was surprised to see one of these show up on US eBay, only picked up one but the seller seems to have a few left. Interesting they made them with hard glass and soft glass.

I'm not sure (@Max will probably know), but I think hard glass was used for later lamps, I don't think both types were produced at the same time.

As far as I know, this lamp was exclusively made with a hard-glass bulb. Only the reference changed over time.

Hmmm, interesting. It looked to me from examples I've seen that the HG reference was added to the etch later on, but I could be mistaken, I often am..!
