Here is a US M57 175W CWA MH ballast from Jefferson Electric; it will also run 175W H39 lamps. We have since fitted a a boot to cover the capacitor terminals, as there is a potential of 400V on the input side of it from the ballast, not something to brush against accidentally..!!

Another wire factory explosion special.... Razz Truth to be told there are some US HID ballasts over here that are only 2-4 wires, but they are much rarer than the multi tap units which have a lot more. HID ballast

Reminds me as well I should locate some cap boots for my ballast kits. Wonder

Most of the capacitors we get over here (for lighting, anyway, see my ballast boards) have push-in connectors or the wires permanently attached. You do see caps like the one on this ballast for things like motor control circuits though.

I do have a couple of ballasts with the plastic permanent wire caps, but the metal can type is far more common.

Unrelated question, but I seem to recall that the 175w MH ballasts can run a 200w SLI lamp, am I misremembering or is that true? Wonder Linear Sodium Lamp

I got myself "lit up" by brushing against the terminals on the cap. for my 135/180w SOX ballast .

Good thing you got the boot, I try to fit my oil filled capacitors with them. I guess part of the reason most aftermarket ballast manufacturers switched to plastic dry film capacitors with leads is to eliminate the shock hazard from having exposed terminals on the capacitor.
