Westinghouse 450W Clear SBMV Lamp Many thanks to Eric (Cobrahead) for this wonderful lamp. Unfortunately the etch is very faint so I could not get a decent picture. I was sadly unable to get a good image of the small filament inside the arc tube lighting up either, as the light from the ballast filament whited out the camera for a second. I like this lamp, with its two filaments connected in series. It was certainly not designed for the lowest production cost possible. I have a (slightly) later Philips version of it, with a practically identical design.

It's an interesting solution to the ignition of mercury lamps on such a low mains voltage.

I was referring to the two ballasting filaments placed around the burner, which was done to ensure an even light distribution. Such design would be unthinkable today given the added manufacturing cost. You're also right that the low-voltage ignition system is an interesting one.

And inflation makes sure that goods are still more expensive day after day... I miss the quality and attention to details of older lamps produced by reputable brands in the West.
