Indeed. Although the only time I ever tried an electronic ballast on a SOX lamp, it didn't seem to run the lamp up fully compared to a magnetic one. They're certainly ok for lamps designed for them though, such as the Philips CosmoWhite lamps and other small ceramic MH lamps. Given the choice, I do prefer the good old magnetic brick humming away, though.

This is the smallest electronic ballast I could find . Magnetic would've been nice but once you factor in the ballast , ignitor and capacitor , there'd be almost no room left inside .

Yeah I find CMH lamps tend to run great on these. I built a retrofit kit for my Powerlite Junior gumball, retrofitting it from 200w incandescent to 39W CMH. For the ballast I used a electronic Advance which was much easier to fit in there compared to the magnetic equivalent.

This conversion is just about perfect ! 100w incandescent was just too small and dim in this big fixture .

The CMH conversion of incandescent luminaires is always nice indeed, I have several of those in various lights at home and I couldn't be happier with the result. The flickering and changing light color during startup is an added bonus for me, it reminds be that I have "electric fire" lights at home

Thanks Max . I think this fixture looks better as CMH than it did as incandsecent . This lamp does go thru alot of flickering and color "flares" during warm-up .

Agreed, I quite like how my gumball conversion went as well. It also flickers and changes colours during startup. I find CMH, especially the 3000K lamps to be a good substitute for incandescent.
