Nice classic! There are later variants from the Eastern Bloc that were made following the GE Lucalox design but with two amalgam reservoirs to enable an operation at all positions. I'm wondering why GE did not go for that as well. Maybe this complicated the accurate temperature control of the amalgam.

Max, as to GE's methodology, I don't know anymore than you. I bought this for it's design and period of construction.
I found this one, and the LU400/BU for $25 USD plus shipping on US eBay a while back...couldn't pass them up for that price!
