The Philips Photoflux consists of a glass bulb filled with oxygen and thin magnesium or aluminum wires. The combustion of the latter produces an intense flash of light, which found a use in photography. These lamps were first introduced during the 1930s, when they replaced flashguns based on magnesium powder combustion, and remained in production until the late 1970s, eventually replaced by the now ubiquitous electronic xenon flash.
