GE 32W MXR32 Halarc Lamp (Base Down version)
|
Thanks to Tim (wide-lite 1000) for this base-down version of the 32W Halarc MH lamp. This used the arc tube from the short-lived self-ballasted Halarc lamp in an effort not to waste the development of the arc tube. It runs on DC, hence the need for separate base-up and base-down versions, and requires a dedicated ballast, which appears to be magnetic, a nice surprise 🙂
Interestingly, the current measured by the clamp meter reads -0.53A on the negative wire to the lamp, and 0.17A on the positive leg. Subtracting one from the other gives 0.36A which is the correct running current. I've never come across this before, I am assuming it's because the lamp is DC, I have not had a DC MH lamp before. The only slightly worrying thing is that the open circuit voltage of the ballast is 1500V DC, so if you get one of these, take extreme caution..!
The colour from this lamp is very pleasant and the ballast runs quite cool.
