Carbon arc illumination 2

The carbon arc searchlight puts out a brutal amount of light which turns night into day and tests the limits of the camera lens (an old adapted Canon nFD24/1.4L here, hence the strong flares).

That is an absolutely incredible picture, I would hang this on my wall! Is it UV shielded?

Thanks! You should have seen this in person, that was really something to behold. As for the UV content of the light in the projected beam, the searchlight's front glass certainly filters out most of the harmful shortwave components.

Ahh okay so it does have a front cover, I couldn't make it out in the picture.

Yes, it does. The projector front is closed by an assembly of twelve triangular pieces of what I assume is just plain float glass. This silica material has a high iron concentration, which filters out shortwave radiation quite effectively.
