1979 Mazda IDE 500W While General Electric of USA was the first company to experiment with tungsten-halogen burners assembled into GLS lamps, the Compagnie des Lampes (France) developed the technology into a commercial product and released a series of tubular-jacketed halogen lamps in the mid-1960s. The IDE 500W shown here is the smallest model that was made available for the retrofit of standard GLS lamps, delivering superior output (+22 %), flux maintenance (+11 %), and life (+100 %). Moreover, the more compact structure of the halogen lamp led to far more efficient light projection systems which became particularly popular for the illumination of monuments in France during the 1960s and 70s. This is nice, we have a Philips 2000W one, will upload it soon, when I can find the photo.

It is nice indeed. I'm still digging in the literature about it, but I strongly suspect that Mazda employed an unusual hydrogen-iodide fill chemistry to obtain a higher performance than from bare double-ended halogen lamps.
