I wonder why EYE requires it to be run base down ? The construction looks to be the same as the universal burn lamps on this side of the water .

Perhaps it's due to the type of fixture that it's designed, for like the 400W Neon that we have.

It's not clear from the picture, but it seems that the starting probe is located on the side opposite to the end cap. This would certainly explain the /BD requirement, which usually means horizontal to base down. This needs to be checked in Iwasaki's literature to be certain, however.

No, if you zoom in you'll see that the starting electrode is at the cap end, the one at the other end isn't connected. Would have to check the literature as you say, would you know where it could be found..?

Then I don't know the specific reason for the /BD rating. You should check Iwasaki's catalogs to get some clarity on this interesting matter.
