You had different plugs for different current ratings in general (household) applications? That must have been quite a mess...

@Max - Yeah, there were several different sizes, look up BS 546. There were 2A (2 & 3-pin) which were mainly used for small table lamps and the like, 5A (also 2 & 3-pin) for larger appliances up to well, 5A (!) then the largest was 15A although I never saw a 2-pin version of that size. Then someone invented the ring main and 13A fused plugs and things started to make sense..!
