"Fitall' Plug

Here is a rather unusual plug. It was popular in the UK in the late 60s and early 70s, as at that time many houses were still fitted with a mixture of different sized sockets - 2A, 5A and 15A round pin plugs (both 2 and 3 pin) and the now current 13A rectangular pin plug. This device has retractable pins for 5A, 13A and 15A plugs and by extending these and tightening them into place each of the different plug types could be selected.

They were interesting to say the least, but probably quite dangerous..! There is a good Youtube video on them by John Ward here.

That's one word for it, I could use another, but I'd have to ban myself Mr. Green

You had different plugs for different current ratings in general (household) applications? That must have been quite a mess...

@Max, that's putting it mildly... Confused
Ria   [Sun 12 Apr 2026 at 15:52]
@Max - Yeah, there were several different sizes, look up BS 546. There were 2A (2 & 3-pin) which were mainly used for small table lamps and the like, 5A (also 2 & 3-pin) for larger appliances up to well, 5A (!) then the largest was 15A although I never saw a 2-pin version of that size. Then someone invented the ring main and 13A fused plugs and things started to make sense..!
