Strange incandescent lamp

Here is an odd lamp that came in a job lot. It is a 1000W incandescent lamp in an elliptical envelope that appears to have been made for a discharge lamp, complete with retaining dimple at the top. It is branded Calex and is unfused. I have no idea why this bulb shape was used. With a 1000W filament so close to the glass I would think it gets rather hot, I have only lit it to check it works and have not left it running.

That most peculiar indeed. What jacket size is that? Equivalent to 250 W merc?

I'm not too sure, I'd have to fish it out, but that sounds about right.
