I grew up with it, my father was a keen amateur photographer and had his own darkroom. I spent hours in there printing pictures he'd taken

Those must be nice memories there! I also spent some time in the darkroom when I was a student, and I knew a family friend who was in the printing and product photography business before Photoshop was a thing (I got a 2 kW clear mercury lamp from him). Those were certainly good times.
