Living-room HID uplighter v.4 - under the hood

My 4th-gen living-room HID uplighter has four discharge lamps, which requires some serious electronics to drive all that. Because of the high voltage required to ignite the lamps (2 to 5 kV) I've placed the ballast units as close as possible to the luminaire, and here's how it looks like with removed covers.

Thanks ladies, it was quite a challenge to cram that many ballast on such a small space and make it look good.

I think I would have combined the cables up to the lamps, cable-tied them together or something; to me it would look better than having them separate, but other than that, perfect Cool

I thought about that but I decided against bundling the lamp-ballast cables to avoid strong parasitic coupling between circuits. The issue is that one of the ballasts operates at above 100 kHz, and at such high frequency it is very easy to induce currents in other electronic ballasts via capacitive coupling, and I'm not sure they would react too well to that. So, by keeping the outputs separate and the luminaire grounded I ensure that I won't run the risk of killing the drivers prematurely.

Thanks for explaining Max, that makes perfect sense. Love

You're welcome, Sammi! There certainly are some nontrivial aspects to this system.
