Nixi Neon Numerical Indicator
This neon filled Nixi tube is being held close to a small Tesla Coil and is showing the number three. I sometimes use this as a demonstration. Each wire is coded with the resistor colour code. If anyone asks for a number between 0 and 9, all I have to do is hold appropriate wire and the number appears as I earth its lead. Obviously, I am holding the orange wire here.

Nice trick, you must be getting some interesting reactions to that!

Thank, yes, youngsters often show a moment of complete surprise. Importantly, it gets them to engage and think about it for a few moments at least. Then, when they can't understand it they accept it as magic and are happy Laughing

I've just been having a shufti at a kit to build our own clock.! Cool

They're cool but Nixi's tubes are a bit pricey. Feel there is still a market for them to be manufactured in bulk.

Everything that we need will be just over two hundred quid, and the interest I get on my savings account at the end of December will cover that. Cool

Very cool display piece. Along with the Numitron which uses tiny filaments in a 7-segment display, they are very niche bits of history

Nice project Sammi, I quite like the ones that use old oscilloscope tubes as clocks, but they burn the screen, if left on all the time. I did get a circuit that allows 'Pong' to be played on an oscilloscope.
AgentHalogen: thanks. I might have one 7-segment of the Numitron tech you mention. I'll see if I can dig it out.

This is the kit that I was thinking of getting, buying it all as a bundle is slightly cheaper. Cool

Sammi, Nice project, although quite expensive right enough. I think the cost of Nixi tubes will be the bulk of it though. I’d enjoy soldering all that together, although I don’t like lead-free solder to work with as much as old leaded stuff. It is improving a bit though. Wish I had collected more Nixi tubes at the time. I’ve dismantled loads of old Nixi stuff over the years and now it quite rare to find.

Oh we've got plenty of the proper stuff, the company that sells the kit will sell you solder if you need it.! Love
