Medium Pressure Mercury Vapour amp
Osram 400W mercury lamp type MA/V with some hours on it. This lamp works fine but on very close inspection the start series resistor is detached from the circuit by less than a mm. As the outer jacket is at low pressure but not a good vacuum a conduction path across the gap allows the lamp to start normally.

That's lucky.!

That's interesting that the fill pressure is so low as to enable a discharge across the break. I thoughts the internal pressure was closer to atmospheric conditions.

Just checked that out and definitely low pressure fill but may be air. I'll put a picture up.
