The glass bulbs used in lamps where once made by skilled glassblowers, a practice which ended following the development and introduction of glass ribbon machines in the mid-1920s. However, some special bulbs for extremely low-volume productions were still made by hand until the late 20th century. The picture above shows the glass bulb still attached to the blowpipe.

I have a book commemorating 100 years of X-ray tubes at Philips and it has a photo of a glass blower finishing seal on a hard glass tube in 1973. A rare skill today.

I agree. That's a skill that can be found only in small specialized workshops nowadays.
