Osram sourced its sodium arc tubes from NGK, and they did indeed produce a very fine-grained PCA material which appears to be more transparent than other commercial types. I have a 70 W NAV-TS of the 4Y type in which the electrodes are clearly visible, the arctube is even more transparent than in the picture above.
