RLOD#42 (2020.07.20) 1982 Thorn CID 2500W

During the late 1970s AEI/Thorn developed a range of single-ended daylight short-arc metal halide lamps based on the company's CSI platform introduced in the late 1960s. The new lamps were referenced as CID for Compact Iodide Daylight and differed from the CSI by a chemistry based on a high-pressure tin halide mixture with some indium additive, balanced for a light emission at 5500 K. The 2.5 kW lamp featured here is the largest CID model offered by Thorn, a light source which could replace color-filtered 10 kW tungsten-halogen lamps in floodlighting applications. Interestingly, the highly volatile nature of its iodide and chloride fill chemistry enables an operation in the unsaturated vapor regime, which results in an excellent stability and consistency of the lamp’s light-technical properties. Moreover, this allows the input power to be dimmed down to 50 % of nominal level without affecting the light color properties in any significant way.

30A! Wow that's a lot of current through that molybdenum foil. These single ended lamps are super cool, I don't really have a size reference but it looks pretty compact for 2500W. Impressive

It's an impressive lamp indeed! Its electrode gap length is 18 mm only and the outer diameter of the bulb is 40 mm. It's a very compact source for this wattage.
