Late-1970s Philips TUV 11W PS

Although Philips's business has always dealt with medium- and large-volume lighting products, from time to time the Dutch developed and produced highly specialized light sources for some niche applications, often for OEMs. The TUV 11W PS shown here was made in the late 1970s at the company's central lighting laboratory in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, for the purpose of irradiating surfaces with short-wave UVs. The lamp's compact configuration enables a higher irradiation flux than with standard linear TUV lamps. Interestingly, instead of using its #160 glass material, Philips employed fused quartz for this particular lamp, certainly in order to transmit mercury's 184.9 nm resonant line for a more effective result.

Yes, that definitely not your usual UV lamp. What I particularly like in its unusual design is the pair of solid quartz end seals. I'm not sure why they opted for this construction, simpler pinched seals could have worked as well I think.
