Unknown Ballast

Even Andy doesn't know what this is. We suspect it's a ballast for a [url=https://trad-lighting.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=29&pid=141#top_display_media][b]Bumix lamp[/b][/url], but we don't know for certain. Can anyone help..?

Andy is going to try it out on an MV lamp and a separate tungsten lamp to see if it works, metering it out to see if it is one. Wonder

Interesting unit. Looks like non isolated transformer with a resistor ballast on the primary, so behaving a little like an auto-leak. Appears to have some kind of starter on the left. Perhaps some early UV lamp. I have an early UV lamp that is quite long. It looks like it would work on a neon sign transformer but doesn't properly. There is an argon starter gas and it needs a 1kV or so to start but it draws more current once the mercury heats up than a NTS wants to deliver so never heats up properly. This might be the kind of ballast for it

Like I said, we think it might be a ballast for our Bumix lamp, but we're not sure. Anyway, it's certainly an interesting bit of kit..! HID ballast
